Have Yrself a Merry Little Xmas .. Bah Humbug !! « Thread Started on Nov 25, 2008, 12:53pm »
May I first place on the record that the Wombat is NOT a Christmas person. He considers it the season of drunkeness (forgiveable in moderation) and hypocrisy (not forgiveable). His survival mechanism for this upcoming time of year is to hibernate ... away from anoying people such as so-called family, friends and relations who never surface at any other time of year. After booby-trapping the approaches to his burrow, then arming himself with a suitable supply of good booze, good books, music & DVDs and retreats to the furthest reaches of his burrow.
Having got my "Dr House" confession out of the way, I have actually found some interesting Corr "Christmas" numbers. Those with the Live In London DVD will know their rendition of "Merry Christmas - War Is Over" which was an extra cut. The clips I have found are from Christmas 2000 where they appeared on Good Morning America and also from a concert in DC in front of the outgoing El Presidente.
Bearing in mind my aforementioned sentiments about Christmas, it takes a lot for me to "tune in" to Christmas performances per se. These performances, to my mind, showcase some of the very best aspects of the Corrs as artists.Unlike so many so-called artists, these are not egotistical adulterations of the original numbers but rather put into "their" idiom and performed with simplicity, sincerity and immense class.
We maybe have a couple of minor "Andrea's" but they hardly detract from the quality. We also see Jim in an often-overlooked capacity, that as a piano accompanist, but one where he shines. The sisters ..... I will simply comment that these performances illustrate WHY Jim seemingly took leave of his senses and formed a band with these three females genetically programmed to drive him insane. Put them together ...... and you have something magic.
(Interesting to observe in Washington, they actually got Cazz to do the full "dress-up" number !!)
If truth were an ocean would it fit in the pool of a human mind?

Coming from Mr. Grin.... Dr. Hous... er, I mean Mr. Wombat, this is high praise indeed. Sorry to read about your view of the holidays, but many people walk in those same moccasins. I have some empathy for your plight.
I agree with you that these are fine performances, and thanks for posting them. I always thought that the Corrs would make a heckuva Christmas album - one to cheer the hearts even of those for whom the holidays are a humbug devoutly to be ignored. In the days of crass commercialism at Christmastime, a simple, uncomplicated rendition of "O Holy Night" really makes me slow down and get at least a little of the "Spirit of Christmas present."
And the beauty of a Christmas CD from the Corrs would be that it would make the fans happy, and it wouldn't require any songwriting!
