I discovered this group when I went to the US in the 90s. Can people who live there tell me how popular they are (or were) ? I discovered they recently released a new album called "California". But when I saw the second picture here, I could hardly believe it was the same group (compare with the first picture)

Brownie, I have the California CD by Wilson Phillips, too! It’s a really good CD, but unfortunately it did not seem to make much of an impression upon being released in May 2004 after 12 years of silence from the group. I think at one time the album was #35 in June 2004. I never heard one song from it on the radio (just like the Corrs' Borrowed Heaven). I really like this CD because Wilson Phillips cover songs from the “California Rock” scene of the late Sixties and Seventies that I listened to as a kid: The Eagles, Linda Ronstadt, The Beach Boys, Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, Fleetwood Mac, Jackson Browne, The Byrds, and the Mamas and Papas. I would say that, in terms of musical style, Wilson Phillips is one of the closest American “relatives” of the Corrs. Both groups tend toward "softer" pop, and both make great use of multi-part harmonies in their music. For those who don’t know the pop group Wilson Phillips, it is made up of Carnie and Wendy Wilson (daughters of Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys) and Chynna Phillips (daughter of John and Michelle Phillips of the Mamas and Papas). At the end of their cover of the Beach Boys’ “In My Room” you can hear Brian Wilson exclaim, “THAT SOUNDS GREAT!! I LOVE YOUR SOUND!!”... a sweet moment that the girls decided to leave on the track. To answer your question, Brownie, Wilson Phillips was HUGE in about 1990-1991, at the time of their debut album, Wilson Phillips. Their first single “Hold On” peaked at #3 in June 1990. In August 1990 they had their first #1 single “Release Me.” “Impulsive” went to #3 in November 1990. “You’re In Love” went to the top of the charts in April 1991. The group broke up in 1992, not long after the release of their second album, “Shadows and Light” which was not as successful. It’s hard to believe that it was that long ago that they were so big. I was not really a fan of them back then. But their songs from that time still receive plenty of radio airplay on “soft rock” stations. And I'd say they are looking good!

My list : - Wilson Phillips - Shadows and light - You're in love (maxi CD from Japan) - Greatest hits - California You can listen their songs here : www.radioblogclub.com/search/0/wilson_phillips(at least the song : "Hold on" which is my favorite) The first album is really great, almost every song (at least the first half) sounds nearlly like a hit. When the group was seperated I also bought the album "The Wilson" from the Wilson sisters and "Naked and Sacred" (I really like this one) from Chynna Phillips. When you look at both pictures in my first post, can you believe these are the same girls ?

Both groups tend toward "softer" pop, and both make great use of multi-part harmonies in their music. I've just noticed something that seems to confirm that. When I visited this link : www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B000BBYS5Q/qid=1128575376/sr=1-6/ref=sr_1_6/103-6269719-6592620?v=glanI saw this : Customers who bought titles by Corrs also bought titles by these artists:
* Wilson Phillips * The Cranberries * Sara Evans * Lori Carson * Alanis Morissette

I am a Wilson Phillips fan too Their music got me through my college years I have Wilson Phillips, Shadows and Light and California (which I absolutely love - they certainly did the songs justice) and Chynna Phillips' Naked and Sacred. I also have Carnie and Wendy's Christmas cd "Hey Santa". This is a very nice cd for the holidays and there is even a message from Carnie and Wendy on it. Does anyone remember them performing "Hold On" at the grammy awards? I still have that on tape! Steve, I have heard "Go Your Own Way" from "California" on the radio here quite a bit and I hear their older hits every once in a while too. It was so nice to hear Brian Wilson quest vocal and play piano on "In My Room" "The girls" have always been close friends and love making music together and, I believe, always will even though album releases may be far and few. Currently they seem to be really enjoying being wives and mothers and bringing up their families Who knows...one day we may see the next generation singing together! ;D

I dreamt about Wilson Phillips last night ! I found another Best of and also a new albums, but they were very expensive (about 50 euros ) so I hesitated to buy them. Live performances of song from "hey santa" have been added on Youtube : www.youtube.com/watch?v=6qmI-5lW3j8www.youtube.com/watch?v=ds0auGn1fH8The only song I don't have (I guess) is the acapelle version of "Turn turn turn" which is not on my CD of California.

Brownie,
Thanks for the links to the "Hey Santa" vids/performances...hadn't seen those.
There is an acappella version of "turn turn turn"? That song is special to me. On my "California" cd there is an acappella version of "Already Gone" after "In My Room".

Yes, but it was a special edition of the album. I didn' buy it because it was much more expensive than the normal one, just for one song.

Thanks for explaining Brownie. I also re-read your post and see what you meant now. I agree 50 euros sounds really expensive!
I am glad they recorded "Turn Turn Turn" and that I have it on the normal edition. I really like their version.
