Hey guys. There are loads of threads concerning pop and rock groups... but what about orchestral music? What about great composers? Leonard Bernstein? JOHN WILLIAMS? hahaha, ok...bernstein and williams are not really calssical composers BUT they for example composed awesome film music! Or like leonard bernstein: a musical! West side story, everybody knows that one! Its great music and everything! Or John Williams, composer of the famous "Star Wars" theme. I just discovered another movie theme. It's called "The Ludlows". Just awesome! Could listen to it all day long! Do you like orchestral music? I mean, "the corrs unplugged", most of the songs sounded really awesome with the orchestra, didn't they?

Caro, I do enjoy classical music and I am also a big fan of film soundtracks. A great soundtrack will make a good movie great! There have been a lot of good ones. When you mention "The Ludlows" are you talking about the music by James Horner for Legends of the Fall? Here’s a list of some of the composers of movie scores that have made me stand up and take notice of their work while watching a movie and the name of the films): John Barry (b. 1933) – Dances With WolvesPatrick Doyle (b. 1953) – Sense and SensibilityRandy Edelman (b. 1947) – Kindergarten Cop, GettysburgJerry Goldsmith (1929-2004) – RudyJames Horner (b. 1953) – Braveheart, Glory, Titanic, Apollo 13Michael Kamen (1948-2003) – Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, Band of BrothersMark Knopfler (b. 1949) – The Princess BrideHenry Mancini (1924-1994) – Breakfast at Tiffany’s, The Pink PantherRandy Newman (b. 1943) – The Natural, Seabiscuit************* Rachel Portman (b. 1960) – Emma, Mona Lisa SmileThanks for reminding me of her! (see Caro's post below) ************* Howard Shore (b. 1946) – The Lord of the RingsAlan Silvestri (b. 1950) – Forrest GumpJohn Williams (b. 1932) – Star Wars, Raiders of the Lost Ark, etc.Hans Zimmer (b. 1957) – The Lion King, Gladiator, etc.Looking at my list, it shows that we need more women composers of film music. Maybe later I will do another post of some of my favourite classical music. Hyperlink man!

yay, thanks for positing those! Yes, and it's true! I can't imagine "forrest Gump" without this characteristic music! And haha, the funny thing is, aaaall the musicians you mentioned, and especially the movies they composed for, all they're melodies pooped in my head imeediatly after I read the movie titles! hahaha ;D The themes are mostly reaaaally characterisitc and make you associate the music with a film or a film with the music immediatly, don't they? Hey, hehe, I know a female composer of a great Movie soundtrack...her name is Rachel Portman. She composed the music for "Mona Lisa Smile". this music, or suite, what it's also alled, is reaaaally aaawesome! I bought the whole soundtrakc just because of the theme! hihihi So hehehe, There ARE great female composers, ...but still not too many, as you said WE CAN CHANGE THAT! hahahaha ;D

Hey Browni With Yanni, do you mean Yann Tiersen? Steve already posted who composed the music for "Forrest Gump". It's Alan Silvestri hehehe. Yesterday I listened to a piece by Bobby McFerrin, never heard of him before, to be honest. But this was really funny, because there is a man singing, and tenor, he only sings something like: "dooooo do dooooooo" and os on. but he more sounds like an instrument! A flute or something! Awesome! And later you regognize that it's a real human beeing singing there! haha ;D Btw, I am not sure, but...wasn't John Williams nominated for an Academy Award again?

Thanks for reminding me of Rachel Portman because her soundtrack to Emma did catch my attention, but I forgot about her. I just added her to my list, because she is a great composer, and there will be more great women composers, I'm sure of it! And I probably should have included Yann Tiersen. I love the soundtrack he did for the film Amelie.

snookyjojo: no I was talking about Yanni en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yanniso I guess you don't know him. I'm looking for a piano music by Danny Wright. If you follow Ice Skating, it was performed by the german pair Woetzel/Steuer in Olympics 1994. Does somebody know this track ?

Brownie, looking HERE it appears that in 1998 Mandy Wötzel and Ingo Steuer skated in the long program to two pieces from Danny Wright's album, Moods of Indigo. The pieces are: Wings of Hope and In Memory.

I´m sure that we will have a really great female composer in the near future who will become very famous. We all know her. Her first name starts with "C" and her last name starts with "J"!!! Ok, but now back to classical music. I love classical music. Yes, Caro, you are so right, Leonard Bernstein is such a great composer. When I was still playing in the orchestra we played something written by him, I think, but I can´t remember what it was. And of course I love all these typical classical composers like Mozart, Beethoven, Bach, Schumann, etc. I love "Le carneval des animaux" by Camille Saint-Saens, the "Peer Gynt Suite" by Edvard Grieg, especially the 9´th symphony of Beethoven with Ode to the joy, which is by the way part of the movie "Dead Poet´s Society" that I absolutely love, the "Magic Flute" by Mozart, and many many more. As you can see, this is the right topic for me. I could go on and on like that. Thanks for starting this topic Caro, it´s wonderful. Oh, not to forget that, I really love the soundtrack of Forrest Gump. Thanks for mentioning it, I had completely forgotten about it, shame on me. At the moment I´m singing a classical piece in my singing lessons. It´s a song from Cherubino from the opera "the wedding of the Figaro" (don´t know how to translate it better).

Okay, jesus, you´re all such experts...
Just mentioning quickly that my favorite piece is "Air" (Suite No 3; D major; 2nd movement) by Johann Sebastian Bach and I have the slight feeling that this won´t change because I am totally in love with that one...(ahaha, listening to it while writing.). I also like Antonio Vivaldi´s "Four Seasons" for instance.....
