I´m more than happy with Ms Kilcher´s new album! It felt like a century to wait for it! Of course there was “0304” being released after “This way” and, I liked “0304” for its unique character in the Jewel history of music. It´s not like I do not like “0304”, I really like it but it IS different from her other CDs. I am a total fan of “This way” because of the Rock and Country influence being mingled with the Folk and Pop we know from Jewel. “0304” was drifting into a more Pop direction. With “Goodbye Alice in Wonderland” Jewel´s taking it back to the Rock/Pop/Folk/Country. I know most of the original versions of the songs on her new album and back then they sounded a lot like Folk!!! Jewel now managed to give them a new basis, turning them into something new, something influenced by the years and experiences and events that passed by. At the same time the songs still have their original soul. They just sound more mature and powerful…full of strenghts now, without losing their fragility! Jewel´s songwriting is a miracle to me. She manages to keep the perfect balance.
It´s a pity though, that some articles now say that Jewel could not come up with another new album too soon for she´d like to rather produce and write for others. At least, that´s what I read in a couple of articles and interviews. Though, I only believe it, when I see and hear her saying it! Still, the possiblility that she may not be back like this makes me sad.
I am highly enjoying the new CD now and can´t stop listening to it.
I´ve been a Jewel fan for about 5 years now and never had a chance to see her perform live. This is something I´d still love to happen. So far I did not hear anything about her coming to Germany to promote the new CD, though.

My favourite songs are: Again and again Good day (was that the title of Number 4?) well okay, then Sattelite and the number beofre the last dance Rodeo, and Last dance rodeo is one of my favourite songs, too, and then the one after last dance rodeo. That's it I guess...are there even so many tracks ont he CD? I guess I just named all of the songs hahahhahahaha! But that's just because I listen to the CD from the beginning to the end! skipping only one or two songs, honestly! ;D

Thank you for your reviews, Cynthia, Swantje and Caro. I really think that it's a great album too. It's consistently good from start to finish; I don't skip any of the songs. In that respect, it's my favourite Jewel album. It's a great blend of folk and rock with some elements of country. The lyrics to Jewel songs are so important; they are always potent and poetic, in some ways akin to those of Bob Dylan is his heydey. You already pointed out some of the great tracks. I would add the title track, "Goodbye Alice In Wonderland." She really sings the song as someone who has "lived" the song. The part that gets me is "But I never knew it was you/Who was breaking my heart/I thought you had to love me/But you did not." It's the WAY she sings these verses. "Good Day" is a great song of (ultimate) optimism, and I like incredible way in which she gets an unusual sound out of her voice like a jazz singer. The edgy "Words Get In The Way" is one of my favourites. It's catchy, rythmic and a great vocally, I think. It rocks. "Fragile Heart" caught my attention early on, and I still like it. In the song "1000 Miles Away," Jewel does things vocally that I have never even knew possible. I suspect it's not for everyone, but I happen to like what she does a lot. Here's what I wonder: if the album consists of mainly older songs that she has written years ago, what does this mean (or not mean) about the future direction in which Jewel will go with her music? In the United States Goodbye Alice in Wonderland has spent seven weeks on the charts and currently stands at #97, falling from #77 one week ago. It peaked during its first week at #8. The chart performance shows that Jewel has a strong "core" fan base, but has maybe lost ground with some of her "casual" listeners. No matter what, I am pleased with the album. I even like the album booklet art. Oh why do we have to be fans of artists who make us wait so long? Swanny, I hope that she makes it to Germany in support of Goodbye Alice In Wonderland. As a fan of five years, you are deserving and overdue!

Darn it, I wanted to submit my question and after typing it all down they suddenly ask me to first register to the washingtonpost.com. Which is what I do not wish to do. So I guess my question will stay unanswered. Oh well.

A member of the Corrs Club, Rick T. attended a Jewel concert the night before last, and I wanted to post it here, in order to preserve his observations, since his post at the Corrs Club OT board will go away with time. First of all, here is what Jewel wrote about the concert at her MySpace: Included in these dates is a stop on November 28th at the Rialto Square Theatre in Joliet, IL where the members of the Chicagoland Pops Orchestra conducted by GRAMMY® award winning Arnie Roth will join Jewel on stage for an unforgettable evening. The show will be filmed for a two hour PBS concert special documentary and will also be used in an upcoming February Soundstage episode. Here is what Rick T. wrote about the concert on the eve of his attending: Jewel is performing live at the gorgeous Rialto Theatre in Joliet, IL (the city in which I work) with a full orchestra and the concert's also being filmed for a PBS concert special documentary! I haven't seen Jewel in concert since I'd LAST seen her at the '97 Lilith Fair (which was awesome!), so I'm absolutely thrilled to be seeing her during this very special event. =) Okay, next.... the concert review...

Written by Rick T.:My write-up of Jewel's concert at the Rialto Theatre last night. 29-Nov-2006 17:58:47
For those of you who like Jewel, you're in for a real treat when this show gets broadcast early next year.
Firstly, Jewel looked great! She wore a snug, brown tank top over a longer white one (I do believe) and blue jeans, which were also tight-fitting. Jewel's really got a great figure and her clothes certainly flaunted it. One also couldn't help but notice how beautiful her long, straight, blonde hair was. At one point, she said her hair was making her feel like Cher and she did a quick impersonation by moving her hair back from her face with her hand, while doing that Cher 'tongue thing'. LOL!
As expected, Jewel was phenomenal. It was just her and her acoustic guitar for about 2/3 of the show and then the Chicagoland Pops Orchestra came out and accompanied her for the rest. Surprisingly, there was no percussion whatsoever during the entire show. Though I'm a drummer, I was actually pleased that there wasn't any. To me, it was very appropriate and really brought out the beauty of the songs in a minimalistic way. She did all of her big hits, at least that I could tell. I was so happy that she did "Break Me", one of MY favorites! It was pretty cool to hear "Intuition" done with the orchestra.
Jewel interacted with the audience well with her humor and interesting stories. During one standout moment, she began to play a song and some of the audience started to clap to it. But, some of the clappers were HORRIBLY out of time and so Jewel stopped playing and said that they DON'T know how to clap. Haha! She said that she appreciated it, but kindly asked if they would refrain from it, as it was a bit distracting to her. I was so glad she did that, because it would've ruined the song for the taping. From what I understand, Jewel has three stories (all true) that she's been commonly known to tell in her concerts...the "hitchhiking story", the "Bob Dylan story", & the "Mexican drug bust story". I hadn't heard any of them before, but she told them all and they were quite funny. The drug bust one was the most elaborate and amusing. Steve Poltz, singer of the band The Rugburns and an old friend of Jewel's from her struggling early days in music, co-wrote "You Were Meant For Me" with her during a songwriting getaway in Mexico back in '95. The getaway ended up with them on a boat with the Mexican federalies catching some drug smugglers. LOL!! Completely true! She said that if we wanted to see pics of the drug bust (which includes a pic of Jewel holding an AK-47), Steve Poltz has them on his website. Go HERE and scroll down a bit to see.
For an amusing read, you can check out an extended write-up of the drug bust on this Steve Poltz fansite here:
membres.lycos.fr/stevepoltz/drugbuststory.htm
The interesting props and lighting gave the stage a very serene and tranquil appearance. There were short, white, leafless 'trees', some sparsely-branched 'bushes', and some candles. Members in the first row of the orchestra had these short, elegant, white barriers in front of each of them, adding a nice, classy touch to the appearance of the stage and orchestra. They would be similar in function to what you'd generally see in front of a big band member onstage. Essentially everything was individually-illuminated with colored lighting that changed throughout the show, which was really striking-looking. There was a canvas backdrop, on the side of the stage I could see, that had a very convincing rock-like texture pattern on it. Drawn on the main backdrop were large illustrations of an owl, a frog sitting on mushroom, and a fly (if I remember correctly). There was also a hint of stage 'fog' to help with the ambiance and enhance the stage lights. I really can't wait to see how everything will look on the televised broadcast.
Jewel came out for the encore and this time performed the aria that she'd done accapella at the beginning of the Humphrey's concert. But this time, the orchestra accompanied her. It was stunning! She said a couple of times during the show that she was battling a bit of hoarseness in her voice, but you couldn't tell. And without giving too much else away and potentially spoiling the televised broadcast for any of you, Jewel performed a couple of old classic covers near the end. It was VERY cool! Both of these were done with the orchestra as well. The last one was done accapella in a certain, Swiss Alps singing style. Any diehard Jewel fans will know exactly what I'm talking about.
To me, Jewel is one of the most talented and entertaining performers in the music business today. Her incredible versatility as a singer, as well as her songwriting and guitar-playing skills, make her a force to be reckoned with. I hope you all will be able to see this concert when it is televised next year.
Unfortunately, I didn't get to meet Jewel. But, as I was driving away, I DID see a small group of people waiting by her tour bus in hopes to meet her when she came out.[/size]

Jewel is going to be in my neighborhood in June! It looks like Jewel is now working in the arena of the Country music these days with a new single out called "Stronger Woman" and a new album coming out in June called Perfectly Clear. Though I'm generally not a huge fan of Country music, I do like her new song "Perfectly Clear" (sample can be heard at her website www.jeweljk.com) and at her MySpace page: www.myspace.com/jewel (don't miss her "Cold Song", haha!) Here's a link to a performance of her song "1000 Miles Away" which she did in November 2006 in Joliet, Illinois: www.sendspace.com/file/aplkdf
