The early 1970's was a great time for slow pop with many great melodic songs and ballads. I thought it would be fun (especially for us old dudes) to shine a spotlight on some of the great music we had growing up. Here are a few from me: "Aubrey" - Bread HQ"Precious and Few" - Climax HQ"I'd Love You to Want Me" - Lobo HQ"Morning Has Broken" - Cat Stevens HQ"Star" - Stealers Wheel HQ"That's The Way I Always Heard It Should Be" - Carly Simon HQ"Angie" - The Rolling Stones HQ"My Love" - Paul McCartney & Wings HQ"I'm Not In Love" - 10cc [got deleted] "Danny's Song" - Loggins & Messina HQ

Here's another one that I liked and I was quite taken with the singer : "Come On Over" - Olivia Newton-John HQBonus points if you can tell me who wrote the song. Here's another song that blew me away, even when I was just a kid: "Vincent" - Don McLean HQThe band AMERICA was another favourite during those years. I couldn't find a contemporaneous YouTube of the great song "Daisy Jane", but here's another great song that they did: "Lonely People" HQ

What a bunch of great songs!! There are some groups, I've never heard of though (that's why your topic is for, right??) and some you made me discover like Bread (with "Everything I own"). I was born in the early 70's and i discovered some of those songs later on with the different covers like "Vincent" (Vonda Shepard and Josh Groban made awesome rendition ). Of Course, I've heard about Cat Stevens, Carly Simon, The Stones, Paul McCartney & The Wings and that 10 Cc song has just brought back memories! I love the ones you put there, thank you, keep on posting and... oh, Olivia's song was written by Barry and Robin Gibb (I'm a huge Bee Gees fan ) Seeya next

and... oh, Olivia's song was written by Barry and Robin Gibb (I'm a huge Bee Gees fan ) You get the bonus points!! ;D I'll look for some more YouTubes and post if I find any memorable ones (there are some songs that I can't find good versions of on YT). We need to do a thread for the 1980's too, since I didn't listen to the radio much then and I may have missed some good ones.

Finally really had a look at this thread ... and a few memories with some of those numbers. Interestingly, a few Aussie "expats" in that list with Air Supply (more early 80's though) and Livvie. Was burrowing thru YT earlier and came across another one who probably should rate amongst those great female vocalists of that decade that we've discussed in other threads. I give you Ms Helen Reddy, who had a number of enormous hits during the 70's both with her own materials and first rate covers. She was also a very valuable mentor for Olivia Newton John and opened a number of doors in the States for her. I will confess she is yet another artist on whom I've ended up doing a massive retrospective reassessment. Here are a few clips from those days The first annual American Music Awards 1974 (a medley of her hits) www.youtube.com/watch?v=zMDqbtJle6A&feature=relatedShe was the first Australian female vocalist to really try and break into the US market. A little of her history. www.youtube.com/watch?v=dWriFRra9rk&feature=relatedThis one should get a laugh. In the late 70's, she had some success with a cover of Gale Garnett's early 60's hit " We'll Sing In The Sunshine". This is from an appearance on the Muppet Show, aided & abetted by an extraordinarily talented camel named Sopwith. www.youtube.com/watch?v=L9X-k0uoA-4&feature=related

What a dirty trick was played on Helen Reddy by the record company in the States! I liked Helen Reddy's music - and it was popular here in the States. It was a long while before I knew she was Australian. I have some memories of swimming in a river while "Delta Dawn" was in my head and on the portable radios at about the time that it was topping the charts. It must have been around August but I can't remember the year. (I just looked it up and it peaked at #1 on September 15, 1973). It's such a shame that Helen Reddy got out of the business. I think she was honored recently at the ARIA awards, wasn't she? I remember because Vanessa Amorosi sang "I Am Woman". (Just looked at that and she was inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame in 2006).

We also had a lot of great soul music on the radio, and I was a fan quite a bit of that too! (AM radio was such a great way to be introduced to all kinds of music). The Stylistics - "You Make Me Feel Brand New" Dobie Gray - "Drift Away" The Chi-Lites - "Oh Girl" The Manhattans - "Kiss and Say Goodbye" There was real soul in those days of the Motown and Philly groups before rap music overran and obliterated soul music. I believe that it will re-surge some day. Can't keep this kind of music down forever!
