U2 classic beaten by The Corrs in new chart
BY NIAMH HENNESSY
THE Corrs have edged in front of U2 in a list of Britain’s bestselling albums.
The family singers came in at number 17 on the list with their album Talk on Corners which has sold almost 3million copies.
The best-selling U2 album according to the list was The Joshua Tree which had sales of just over 2.6million.
Ronan Keating’s former band Boyzone pipped Westlife to a place on the list coming in at number 89 with 1.7million sales of their album By Request. However, Westlife failed to make the cut.
Oasis took the third spot on the list by selling 4.3million copies of (What’s The Story) Morning Glory? They were beaten only by Queen’s Greatest Hits album with 5.4million sales and The Beatles’ Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band with 4.8million sales.
The news that The Corrs have sold more copies of a single album than U2 will come as a surprise, especially now Andrea Corr and Bono have teamed up to produce Andrea’s new album which is expected to be released early next year.
Looking at the chart overall rock enthusiasts will be shocked to see that the Rolling Stones and Bob Dylan haven’t made the top 100, while actors-turned-singers Robson and Jerome are in at number 43.
I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here favourite Jason Donovan is also in there — at number 100, one below Kylie Minogue.
The chart which is based on sales alone was compiled by music channel VH1 along with the Official UK Charts Company, John Kearns VH1 executive producer said: “I think music buffs will have fun talking about it but they can’t argue with the public.
The beauty of this is it’s pure hard fact, it’s totally based on sales.
“Obviously there are some surprises in there. I think it’s brilliant because it’s so varied.”
Massive U2 fan Lean McGuinness was astounded at the results. She said: “I’m shocked at the numbers. I mean The Corrs are decent enough but they’re not even remotely in the same league as U2 — possibly the biggest rock band in the world.”
Another Westlife fan said: “I don’t understand it. Last week Westlife got their 14th number one just behind The Beatles and Elvis, yet they haven’t even made this list.
“To be honest the fact that Robson and Jerome are in the top 50 says it all. The public really should ask themselves some serious questions!”
- TOP SELLERS: The Corrs whose Talk on Corners album has sold more than U2’s Joshua Tree.
- The Corrs, Andrea, Sharon, Caroline and Jim, have sold over 60million albums worldwide.
- All of The Corrs were born in Dundalk and are the children of musicians Gerry and Jean Corr.
- The band was formed to audition for the 1991 film The Commitments. While auditioning they were spotted by their future manager John Hughes.
- They recorded Canto Alla Vita with Josh Groban for his self-titled album and have also been involved with a number of collaborations alongside music stars such as Rod Stewart, Alejandro Sanz, Ronnie Wood from The Rolling Stones, Sheryl Crow on C’mon, C’mon and Bono.
- The Corrs received honorary OBEs in 2005 for their outstanding contribution to music and charity work. This was met with some discontent by some back home as the Order is, obviously, a British award headed by the Queen.
