During my recent discussion with "somebody" a few months back, the boozy discussion got around to numbers we'd like to see the band cover. Maybe, I'm also showing my age but the following numbers stuck in my mind and when raised, got some agreement. The first was one for Sharon. Her vocal texture can have a slightly nasal quality with even a slight "American" twang to it. With that in mind, she could well stick a toe into a little "country crossover" material. She's not a "belter" but the song I have in mind doesn't require that. The song is the Crystal Gayle hit from the mid 70's "Don't It Make My Brown Eyes Blue". Just think it could be a good fit for her voice. Perhaps she could nudge that deadbeat brother of hers to back her on piano; he is one very fine piano accompanist. au.youtube.com/watch?v=F5JNtxeJLQ4I think those are good selections and I agree that Sharon has potential in country music. In early '06, I even made a suggestion for release in the U.S. Country scene : Nobody listened to me, though! They never do! I think that "Don't It Make My Brown Eyes Blue" would fit Sharon's vocal range and qualities quite well. The other is another oldie but one suspect they heard growing up with their parent's "playlist". Bono once described them as "the Carpenters dressed in Versace" and he is on the money in a number of ways. The deeply melodic strain in their music, the tight vocal harmonies and Andrea at her best possesses similar vocal qualities to those of Karen Carpenter. These being tremendous presence, a natural almost conversational ease and control and moreover the facilty for peeling away the outer layers of a song and getting to its emotional core and communicating it intimately to the listener. The song is "Goodbye to Love", quite probably the original "power ballad". If you listen to it through to the end, you will see the OTHER key reason for picking it. Bear in mind his WCID efforts, Mr Drennan let loose on that outro would be the definitive "pig in mud" au.youtube.com/watch?v=FdG-ITxL8okThe "Goodbye to Love" is also a good choice and I see what you mean about the outro and its potiential for Anto. It is such a shame that certain loud-mouthed critics were always so hard on Karen and the Carpenters. I think that it was partly a product of those times during which there existed - much more than today - a distinct generational divide. The Carpenters were viewed by some narrow-minded critics to be on the wrong side of that divide. I, for one, was aware of the criticism even at a young age, but I didn't buy it, and loved the Carpenters and their great songs, like Superstar. I spend many an hour with headphones connected to my parents' 8-track player listening to A Song for You and Now and Then. Though Karen's voice is a bit lower than Andrea's, I also feel that there is a similarity between their styles. Both sing in a very natural "untrained" style (that is antithetical to the operatic or "belting diva" styles) but which gives it a "girl-next-door " sort of appeal, and maybe akin in a way to what Vera Lynn's music did during the 40's. Something in her voice helped her to beat out all the actresses and pin-ups to win the nickname of "The Forces' Sweetheart": ie.youtube.com/watch?v=onH-WTVQGsgBut I digress!

HMM....
As a joke, "Jump Down" by B*Witched Seriously, "Shine" by Vanessa Amorosi. I can see Sharon headlining, and the other three being all acoustic & backing vocal-like.

ROFLAO to first suggestion, your Highness !! Actually see some mileage to "Shine", esp acoustically. Not sure that I 'd have Sharon "headlining" but rather I'd make it a "sister act" with possibly all three sharing the lead and their harmonies could definitely "shine" in the choruses. Keeping on the acoustic theme, and also bearing in mind our new member from Brazil; my mind has swung to a number from that part of the world that I suspect the Corrs possess the vocal & instrumental talents and the class to bring off beautifully live and/or Unplugged. The song is "Manha de Carneval", which was originally from a Brazilian film of the late 50's "Black Orpheous" and became quite famous around the world both vocally and as a guitar number and was also known as "A Day In The Life of A Fool". Here are 2 clips of this song: au.youtube.com/watch?v=mf9km-CDS20Subtlety & restraint are not words used to describe the music of Dutch orchestraleader Andre Rieu but this number was actually v classy. au.youtube.com/watch?v=-3gxwHVrwCwa guitar solo version As the Rieu clip shows, female harmony and this song go hand in hand - tick that box. I'd also have Caro on bongo (ala Everybody Hurts) and there is definitely room for a Sharon solo. Might also coax Anto up front for the guitar work, either solo or some interplay with Jim. They've crossed the language barrier before when they did "The Hardest Day" with Alejandro Sanz so why not have a lash at a classic ....... I think they're more than up to it !!

I think it's more about the emotion than the vocal range in Shine - that's why I picked Shaz... But I do agree with all points made on that.
I'd also like to hear more Fleetwood Mac stuff from the Corrs. And Jim singing once again. (it's not like he can't!)

[quote author=cw board=abouttheband thread=806 I think those are good selections and I agree that Sharon has potential in country music. In early '06, I even made a suggestion for release in the U.S. Country scene : Not sure about pure country, but certainly in the "country crossover" area; a niche mined very smartly from the late 60's by artists such as Glenn Campbell, Anne Murray, Olivia Newton-John and arguably the Eagles. It's actually another song from that genre that I think would fit Sharon's vocal style rather well. The song is "I Just Fall In Love Again" which was a major hit on Pop, Country & AC charts in 1979 for Anne Murray. The song was actually originally recorded by the Carpenters in 77 but not released as a single. Murray: au.youtube.com/watch?v=26o7UQ339c0original: au.youtube.com/watch?v=s1aEk7I0ZfcMeli, I DO understand where you are coming from re Shine; just not sure that it's a Shazz vehicle as against Andrea/harmonies. I DID actually suggest a number for Jimbo if you look back in the thread !! Revisiting the Mac ?? Can definitely see the temptation having struck gold with Dreams (gotta say I prefer Andrea's vocals to Stevie's on that one) .... but risky. This is actually quite an interesting thread cos one can see the potential for the group to really branch out somewhat yet you have considerable confidence that they would actually do justice to what is suggested. Steve, a bit of a left-fielder here. What's yr thoughts on them having a lash at a few "classics" from the 60's; you know some of the old Bacharach/David numbers that Dione Warwick debuted and even a few outa Motown ?? My motivation ?? Quite simply they are great songs and don't necessarily require vocal gymnastics/ego-tripping but rather good control/precision/the capacity to subtely convey the emotion. Unlike the vast percentage of artists going around, "our mob" actually have these qualities plus the taste and musical sensitivity to do justice to this music I think we ALL would love to hear more from Cazz vocally. Whilst unsure of it's overall power, her voice is very pure and very sweet and I'd also like to see the fun side of her personality projected. A song that comes to mind is "For Once in My Life" which Stevie Wonder first brought out and also had quite a funky bass-line. Maybe not one for recording but I reckon it could go over very well in an intimate gig with her upfront with her old mate (and prime tormenter). Re Bacharach; I reckon there's definitely some prime material for Andrea vocally; the girl's group harmonies and Jim's talent's as an arranger (along with a trusted collaborator like Fiachra Trench). A song like "Anyone Who Had A Heart" I think could be an absolute treat.
