Township Tour: Irish rock group, The Corrs, who are in town for Madiba's 46664 concert, went to Imizamo Yethu in Hout Bay yesterday to meet 150 Irish volunteers who have arrived to build homes there. The man behind the housing development is Irish businessman, Niall Mellon, centre.
The Corrs were in South Africa for Nelson Mandela's 46664 Aids Awareness Concert. The performed there at Greenpoint Stadium in Cape Town on the 29th of November 2003. They were well hydrated.
On 13 May, 2005, Sharon appeared with Niall Mellon on the Kelly Show (Ulster TV) to promote the 2005 Township Challenge. Sharon has confirmed that she will be in South Africa for the event in November. The Corrs involvement in Township Challenge was the result of a chance meeting.
Sharon's husband, Gavin, met some of the Irish builders at the hotel in which the Corrs were staying for the Nelson Mandela 46664 Aids Awareness Concert. While in the gym, Gavin heard a bunch of Irish accents. He got talking to them and found out that they were the Builders/Volunteers. Gavin ended up down on the building site for the whole of the next day, lending a hand.
Gavin, of course, had told Sharon about it, and the Corrs paid a visit to the township where all the Builders/ Volunteers were working, and they have been supporting the cause ever since. According to Sharon's interview, she was really shocked at the level of poverty she saw in the township, families of as many of ten living in houses made of corrugated iron. Sharon explained: "you see stuff on the TV it never really hits you as hard as seeing it in person."
