From Tromsø, Norway - 46664 Arctic!
By Mathias de Groot - 12th June 2005
On Saturday June 11th "46664 Arctic", the 3rd Aids Benefit concert, took place in Tromsø, Norway. As we reported earlier, Sharon would be part of the line-up, without the rest of the band. Not only did she performed two songs together with Zucchero & Brian May ('Everybody's Got To Learn Sometime' and 'Così Celeste'), she also performed 'Toss The Feathers' on her own in front of an audience of 15,000 people. Sharon also played the tambourine (and danced) during a performance of Angelique Kidjo ('Africa') and appeared at the final end together with all of the participating artists.
The show was broadcasted live, at least in Norway and Sweden, and people were also able to watch it through a webcast, after making a donation. Other artists that performed were Annie Lennox, Peter Gabriel, Robert Plant, Razorlight, Bongo Maffin, Johnny Clegg, Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Ane Brun, Anneli Drecker, Kaizers Orchestra, Madrugada and Saybia.
The mission of the 46664 Arctic concert, with its associated campaigns, is to raise awareness and commitment to combat AIDS/HIV. The particular mission of the concert held in Tromsø north of the polar circle (46664 Arctic) and the associated campaigns is to emphasise the global threat of the epidemic and the need for global commitment to address that threat. The vision of the 46664 Arctic is: By 2015 - a generation free from HIV/Aids.
Mandela's 46664 campaign, initiated in 2003 and organized by the Nelson Mandela Foundation, was founded in the support brought to him by some of the world's biggest music artists. Following the first of its events, 46664 South Africa, held in Cape Town in November 2003, the campaign has escalated, adding high profile supporters ranging from movie stars to former US presidents.
